September Seasonal Foods in the Netherlands
Share
September is my favorite month of the year. The markets in the Netherlands turn into a celebration of colors: fresh pompoen, crunchy appel, juicy druif, and leafy greens like andijvie and snijbiet. It’s the perfect season to eat healthier, save money, and enjoy food that tastes amazing simply because it’s fresh and local.
Why seasonal eating matters
Eating with the seasons is not just about taste. Seasonal fruits and vegetables:
- Contain more nutrients
- Are often cheaper and fresher
- Support local farmers and sustainable choices
For expats, discovering Dutch seasonal foods is also a way to feel more connected to your new home.
September highlights
Here are just a few seasonal stars this month:
- Pompoen (pumpkin) – rich in fiber and vitamin A
- Appel (apple) – the perfect snack or salad topping
- Druif (grapes) – sweet but full of antioxidants
- Andijvie (endive) – classic in Dutch stamppot
- Snijbiet (chard) – versatile and packed with iron
