Dutch Supermarkets Decoded: What’s Actually Healthy and What’s Just Clever Marketing
Share
If you’ve ever stood in a Dutch supermarket, holding a product labeled “fit,” “light,” or “zonder suiker” — wondering if it’s actually healthy — you’re not alone.
After working with hundreds of expats in the Netherlands, I’ve noticed the same frustration again and again:
you want to eat well, but the labels are confusing, the ingredients sound scientific, and what’s considered “healthy” here often doesn’t match what you learned back home.
Let’s decode it together 👇
1. “Zonder suiker” doesn’t always mean sugar-free
In Dutch, “zonder suiker toegevoegd” means “no sugar added” — but that doesn’t mean it contains no sugar at all.
Fruit yogurts, mueslis, and sauces can still be packed with natural sugars or sweeteners that spike your blood sugar and energy levels.
✅ Tip: Check the nutrition label — if sugar (or anything ending in “-ose”) appears in the first 3 ingredients, it’s not as innocent as it looks.
2. “Volkoren” (whole grain) is your friend — but look closely
Not every brown bread in the Netherlands is whole grain.
If the ingredient list starts with “tarwebloem” (white wheat flour), it’s not the real deal.
✅ Tip: Look for “volkoren tarwemeel” — this means the entire grain is used, giving you more fiber, vitamins, and long-lasting energy.
3. “Low-fat” doesn’t always mean healthy
The “light” version of a product sometimes contains extra sugar, starch, or additives to make up for the lost taste.
The result? Fewer nutrients, more cravings.
✅ Tip: Choose natural, minimally processed options and carefully check the labels and ingredients list.
4. Don’t fear frozen
Frozen veggies, fruits, and fish in Dutch supermarkets are often just as nutritious as fresh — and sometimes fresher, since they’re frozen right after harvest.
They’re also cheaper and easier to keep on hand for busy days.
✅ Tip: Always have a few frozen options ready. They’re a lifesaver when cooking motivation disappears.
5. The real secret: eat what fuels you, not what’s trending
Supermarket marketing thrives on buzzwords — “protein,” “plant-based,” “detox.”
But health isn’t about trends; it’s about consistency.
When you understand how to choose better products in your environment, everything gets easier — from energy to digestion to mood.
